Since becoming a dad 2.5 years ago, one thing that has been a recurring theme in our house is that everything is about the choices you make. Harper is now 2 years and 9 months old and he gets choices all the time: “Would you rather I take you to the potty? Or would you rather momma take you??” With not going to the potty not being an option at all. And that is good with kids because they need the direction and the boundaries, but with us as adults and as families….there are still choices, but the lines aren’t and shouldn’t be so black and white all the time.
This weekend we’ve been at a family reunion at Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri. It’s gorgeous up here so we spend most of our time just sitting around playing with Harper and Ellie, swimming, riding on the boat, and checking out the local wildlife (Harper’s personal favorite!).
Just after lunchtime, most of the other small kids up here were getting ready to go down for their afternoon nap so I took Harper down to play on the playground down by the pool since his nap time wasn’t going to be for another hour and a half. It’s about a hundred yard walk from our cabin, but along the way there are some cement steps to go down that are at a pretty steep decline. Harper is 2.5 years old and super independent, wanting to do EVERYTHING on his own. He even asks us to leave the bathroom while he’s going potty so that he can do it hisself and have his “privacy”. But as we were walking to the playground today, he stopped at the steps and said, “Hold my hand Dada….” and reached out for me to help him down the stairs. As soon as we got to the bottom of the stairs he let go and was off again, racing down the trail to get to the playground. In that moment, God really spoke to my heart.
Since this is Memorial Day weekend, I think it’s fitting do add in some more of our “Food Rules” series since so many of us will be eating out and cooking out with friends this weekend. Holidays are the best for eating because food is such a social event, but we tend to let our food rules break down and just eat and drink whatever there is instead of sticking to what we know is the healthiest. Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t eat perfect all the time easier and I think it is totally fine and healthy to cheat on your food every now and then just so you don’t go crazy, but just within reason. So here we go…
Rule #32: Don’t overlook the oily little fishes
Wild fish are some of the healthiest things you can eat, but many of the larger fish have problems with metal toxicities, like mercury. The larger fish are also way over-fished and are having a hard time keeping up with the demands we put on them. Smaller fish like mackerel, sardines, and anchovies are well-managed and abundant and are much less toxic. They are chocked full of the good omega-3′s everyone yells at you about so if you get tired of taking the tablets, pick up a can of sardines instead!
In order to make a really good choice and a fully informed decision about whether or not to vaccinate your child, you really have to look up and study each individual disease you are vaccinating for and compare the risk/benefit of the disease to the risk/benefit of the vaccine for that particular disease. I’ve found that many parents have no idea what the diseases really are or what they can cause and will vaccinate for them anyway. Without looking at both, how do you know that the disease is really severe enough to vaccinate for?? So let’s talk about a few of the most popular diseases that have vaccines for them and see what they typically present as.
